What is Reiki?

Reiki is one of those things many people have heard of, but few really understand what it is.

And that’s not surprising, because the word “Reiki” is often used in two different ways:

1. To describe the energy itself.

2. To describe the system, or practice that works with this energy.

It’s helpful to know the difference.

REIKI AS ENERGY

The word Reiki translates most accurately as “spiritual energy.”

It’s the same as what other traditions refer to as “life force energy”, “chi” or “prana” - vital energy that flows through all living things.

When this energy is flowing freely, we feel physically healthy, emotionally resilient, and spiritually connected.

Although this energy can’t (yet) be measured by science, it can be felt by everyone.

Have you ever felt exhausted, then done something that sparked joy and suddenly felt alive again?

That surge of energy isn’t just physical; it’s a deep replenishment on every level.

This is the same universal energy that all healing modalities work with, but in the system of Reiki, it’s approached in a unique way.

REIKI AS A SYSTEM

The system of Reiki was founded in Japan in the 1920s by a Buddhist practitioner named Mikao Usui.

While many people associate Reiki with hands-on healing, that’s actually just one part of the practice.

Reiki is a holistic system that weaves together meditation, energy work, and spiritual principles that support balance and awareness in everyday life.

At its heart, Reiki is a path of self-practice — but it’s also a beautiful gift that can be shared with others, as a hands-on treatment in-person, or by distance.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO ENERGY WORK

One of the most beautiful aspects of Reiki is how it’s practiced.

Unlike many forms of energy healing that involve directing, or manipulating energy, Reiki is a passive practice of non-doing.

When treating others, the practitioner simply brings themself into a state of relaxed presence, lays their hands on or above their receiver’s body, and allows the intelligence of the energy to flow where it’s needed.

SAFE & SUSTAINABLE

The practitioner is not actively “giving” the recipient energy.

There’s no controlling where the energy should go, or what it should do.

Reiki moves with its own wisdom, guided by a higher consciousness.

This means that the receiver will only ever get what they truly need in that moment - it will never push them beyond their capacity.

The passive nature of Reiki keeps both practitioner and receiver safe.

There’s no risk of taking on each other’s energy.

And because there's no “giver”, a healing circuit  is created - one in which both practitioner and recipient simultaneously receive healing.

This is what makes Reiki such a sustainable practice.
